Revisiting Glasson Dock

Dismantling of Trawler in Lancaster

Following the successful trawler dismantling of an old fishing trawler last year, we were called back to Glasson Dock, Lancaster by the Lancaster Ports Authority to help them deal with an abandoned fishing trawler, which was far from sea-worthy and whose fishing days were long since gone.

The trawler was located within the Glasson dock area behind the lock gates, which made it easy to segregate the dismantling works from the influence of tidal waters, and as the photos show the boat hull was sat high on a mud-bank making the hull a little easier to reach without ‘getting wet’, and to further mitigate any risk from working around water we lifted large sections of the trawler onto the adjacent dock area, where is could be safely dismantled away from the water.

During the operation, we installed a temporary ‘heavy-duty’ aluminium trackway system to protect the edge of the dock and to spread the load of our 40t excavator, and specialist dismantling attachments were used to separate and lift sections of the trawler which prevented the need for any operatives to work on or around the hull whilst it was sat in the dock area.

During the works, 100% of the materials generated from the dismantling were recycled, and we have kept the steel wheelhouse completely intact for re-use in an imaginative future project, the nature of which is undecided, but we can definitely see this becoming a ‘glamping pod’, or a ‘feature garden shed’ or hideaway for a keen gardener with a passion for all things nautical perhaps!

Once again, to the delight of the Lancaster Ports Authority, the works were carried out ahead of programme and on budget and the Harbour Master said…“The job went very well, and your lads worked very hard.. ‘Great Job’ !”
